In Bamberg, at the wonderful inn on Dominikanerstraße, from Ash Wednesday to Easter, a beer called "Fastenbier," the Lent beer, is consumed. It was historically brewed to replace solid meals, according to the saying "Liquida non frangunt ieunum" (meaning "liquids do not break the fast"). Amber-colored, bottom-fermented, unfiltered, and unpasteurized, it is a beer with a noticeable smoky profile on the nose, but in the mouth, it reveals an elegant herbal hint. Its good body fullness and the alcohol content of 5.9% make it an excellent "Brotzeit," meaning a great snack, in this spring season.
