The Smoky beer from Birrificio Magis is a Smoked Sweet Stout from the English tradition: dark, sweet, full-bodied, and with a roasted aftertaste reminiscent of the scent of a good sweet espresso coffee. This Sweet Stout is a craft beer with top fermentation, unfiltered, unpasteurized, characterized, as can be understood from the name, by a strong smoky aroma. Sweet Stouts have a fairly recent and very particular history: they are in fact high-fermentation English stouts that originated in the 1900s as a tonic for convalescents or intended for nursing mothers. This is because the nutrients in this beer are rich in properties and organoleptic characteristics. Besides all this, we are talking about a smoked beer: to make it, the brewer uses malt smoked with fine woods before fermentation. Main characteristics of Sweet Stouts: very dark color (like Guinness, which is also a stout), it almost looks like coffee with cream, aromas of cereal and chocolate, a roasted taste that is initially sweet and then bitter, creamy body, and carbonation (these are the bubbles, which in wine jargon would be referred to as "perlage") almost absent or anyway low. Birrificio Magis is very young, but this beer has already distinguished itself for its quality at the Palio dei Birrifici di San Martino dall’Argine (MN), where it was awarded the first special prize 2019 Style Porter & Stout.
